What causes Allergy Eyes?
It all starts when substances called allergens get into your eye. Allergens can come from many allergy sources, including pollen (grass, weeds, trees), dust, mold, and pets. 1 If you're allergic to the substances, they can trigger a reaction called allergic conjunctivitis.

This reaction happens mainly in your conjunctiva, which is the clear, thin layer that covers the eyeball and inside eyelid. The result is irritation, which is also called allergy eyes - red, watery, itchy eyes that can cause a lot of discomfort. These irritating effects may hit you right away or can take some time to reach peak intensity.


Do you suffer during certain seasons?
Depending on the type of allergies you have, symptoms may strike either: 1) during certain seasons of the year (spring and fall); or 2) throughout most of the year. That's because there are two different types of allergic conjunctivitis1:

Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis: If you're allergic to specific grass, tree, or other pollens (ragweed), allergy eyes may hit you in the fall or spring

Perennial allergic conjunctivitis: If you're allergic to dust, molds, or other "indoor" allergens, you may suffer all year long

OPTIVAR is indicated for the treatment of itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis in patients as young as 3 years of age.

In controlled clinical studies, some patients experienced brief eye burning/stinging, headache, and bitter taste. Less than 1% of patients stopped using OPTIVAR because of these effects. OPTIVAR should not be used if you are sensitive to any of the medication's components.
