Information for Parents
Children with allergy eyes experience the same symptoms as adults. Here are some symptoms to look for1:
  • Frequent rubbing of itchy eyes
  • Increased tearing/watery eyes
  • Redness in eyes
  • Eyelid swelling
Home Care Tips1
If you know what your child is allergic to, you can try to minimize his/her exposure (such as being around cats). Most pollen seasons last 4 to 8 weeks, so it may be impossible for your child to avoid the allergens entirely.

If your child has been outside and is experiencing allergic conjunctivitis symptoms, you should wash any possible allergens off your child's face:
  • Use a wet washcloth to gently remove pollen from the eyelids and surrounding area
  • Rinse the eyes with warm water (tears will do the rest)
  • Apply a cold washcloth to closed eyes
  • Shampoo hair every night
If the symptoms aren't relieved, many parents first use an over-the-counter eye drop. Be careful, though, as some over-the-counter eye drops should not be used for extended periods of time without consulting your physician. Read the label carefully or ask your pharmacist for more information.

Talk to Your Healthcare Provider
If your child suffers from an ongoing allergy eye problem, your healthcare provider may have treatments that can help. Prescription eye drops may be used long-term as prescribed by your physician to provide effective relief of the itching associated with allergy eyes.

OPTIVAR is a prescription eye drop that can relieve the itching within 3 minutes and lasts for hours. It is approved for children 3 years and older.

OPTIVAR is indicated for the treatment of itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis in patients as young as 3 years of age.

In controlled clinical studies, some patients experienced brief eye burning/stinging, headache, and bitter taste. Less than 1% of patients stopped using OPTIVAR because of these effects. OPTIVAR should not be used if you are sensitive to any of the medication's components.

Available by prescription only. Ask your healthcare professional if OPTIVAR is right for you. Please see full Prescribing Information.
